“Poking around the Pokeweed”

Here is my entry to this months Gardening Gone Wild’s Picture This Photo Contest : http://www.gardeninggonewild.com/?p=19018.

This month’s theme is portraits.

I caught this strange explorer lurking under this pokeweed plant with its ripening berries. Indians used the juice from these very attractive berries for staining feathers, arrow shafts, and garments, but do not eat them (or any part of this plant), as the result would be violent and most uncomfortable.

I don’t know which is more precious…this picture or the face painting in your previous post. Too cute!!!

    Hi Toni.

This picture is so weird, it still cracks me up that he came wandering down the garden wearing this outfit and chatting away to himself.

Too adorable. This little guy sure knows how to color coordinate with his surroundings. Even though I keep chuckling at how wonderfully goofy he looks on one level – I keep wanting/needing to look again and durned if he also doesn’t look knowing somehow. Wise, even. His eyes looking so directly into ours.

And something about that hand gesture, the reaching out to the viewer…. The overall effect is compelling.

This is so evocative, P. Quite a fascinating portrait (of the artist as a very young man)….

    Hi TD.

And his contorted ear, just for that final bit of extra oddness!

Thank you for your evaluation of the image…a lot of fun. He was taking himself very seriously which, combined with his flamboyant get-up made the whole scene even funnier…in an eccentric Sir David Attenborough sort of way.
